Poker - On a WSOP Freeroll and loving It!!

Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested. Again here's a quick recap:

I tried my hand at poker at a Vegas work trip while I was in college, got hooked. Bought a bunch of books. Studied.  Played after work at some local card rooms. Opened an online account with Party Poker.  Came up with a game plan.  Put a $100 on the site.  Luckily had a solid start.  Built my game on $10 sng's. Won a multi. Hooked up with another poker enthusiest and began spliting profits (Most of which were my big cashes at the time). My partner won a seat to the WSOP Main Event on his own. I then won my own Main Event seat right before it started. Both myself and my partner were able to get get many days of play and cash the 2006 Main Event.  I was knocked out about 700th/9000 for about $17K and he's still going with Humberto Brenes at his table.

Well, now that somehow we both had not only won seats to the Main Event , but both in the money, we were on a total freeroll and my partner had to fight it out with Humberto among others.  He ended up getting through the first half of the day unscathed, but lost his allin attempt later on to finish about 300th/9000 for about $35K!!.  If I ever had worries before that our deal wasn't so good it was put to rest that week. In fact he also cashed a large tournament online only a couple weeks later and since then we have split numerous tournaments, which has really helped us both out flatening out some of the variance that comes with playing multi table tourneys. Our little crew was rollin!!

This was a good omen for the rest of the year.  Only a month later I also won 2 more online multi's and a 7th place in a big tournament. I also believe Party Poker started adding 6 handed sng's, which eventually became my bread and butter. Most the players didn't have a clue as how to play them and I quickly started killing them. That was until one sad day.  In October 2006, Party Poker, the largest poker site and a few other poker sites buckled after a new law went into effect restricting transactions made onto gambling sites. Party Poker being the largest and more importantly, just went public with it's company selling shares onto the stock market, didn't want to risk any chance of ruin and decided to completely abandon all of it's US customers and prevent any US players from playing on their site.  This was a huge blow to the majority of the poker world who for a period of a few weeks wondered if they'd ever see their money in their accounts again.  I remember frantically trying to withdraw and wondering if there was anywhere else I could trust playing without suffering the same fate, and would it prove to as profitable as Party Poker?  Fortunately there were still a few solid poker sites left that had the balls to stand up to the new unfair law and would fight to keep their sites running. I first opened up an account with Pokerstars which was the next biggest poker site. Once getting a couple bucks on their site I was pleasantly suprised.  Unfortunately, it was like starting all over again, but in the end, they picked up a ton of new players and I think is a much better site. It was probably a blessing in disguise. I started to realize the advantage of being able to play on different sites and to be able to maximize game and table selection.  I continued to played 6 man sng's and they eventually added turbo sng's which I really played well.

There was one fantastic development in my personal life. My wife and I had been trying for a while to have a baby, but were met with a few different complications.  My wife had to go through surgery to fix some of these issues and even then we weren't sure it would ever work out. Well around March my wife came down the stairs one day with a nervous excitement on her face and was about to burst when she told me she was pregnant. OMG!!! Wow. My own kid, so crazy!!

In April 2007, Pokerstars was starting to play satelites for the nex year's WSOP Main Event 2007. I thought I'd try out a few after my success in the previous year. I played a $30 rebuy tourney and would you believe I WON!!! I  recorded my 6th major multi table tournament victory and unlike the previous year, Pokerstars had to credit your account with the money and pray that you would cash it out and buy in yourself. I guess because of the new laws. Well as much I wanted a repeat of the previous year, I really needed to build up my new account and I cashed it in. I think I ended up blowing much of it, getting a little bit too cocky with my new found success, so I kept playing the WSOP satelites to try and win another seat. The funny thing was as it got closer and closer to the WSOP, I was really starting to regret not saving the money and playing the event. About a week or two before it was to start I played one last satelite. It was a giant 200+ seat gauranteed event. There were almost 7000 players. Would you guess it but I came in 110th!!! I won another seat!!! This time I was gonna play for sure.  Or so I thought?? Because I already had won a seat earlier that year Pokerstars would only credit my account with Tournament dollars to be used for play Pokerstars. WWWHHHAAATTT!!! I begged and pleaded with them, but they wouldn't budge. So after winning 2 seats to the 2007 WSOP Main Event I wasn't even going to get to play.

It took me a while to get over the whole thing. My poker buddy didn't win a seat so we both decided to play in the smaller events, which didn't pan out so well. Sighhhh....Well with the baby on the way it was probably best off I didn't blow $10K on 1 tournament and was pretty much being inundated with baby stuff and new parent training.
A few months later I did manage to win my 7th and 8th decent multi tourney. They weren't major scores, but still noteworthy.

I think I've written enough for today. To be continued next post as usual......

As far as my latest results, The last couple day have been a bit brutal. I've played a few Multi's since I've had some extra time and won a seat to another $500+30 WSOP Main Event satelite, which I had AA cracked by QQ, then had some guy call off half his stack from late middle position with KJ vs my EP allin w/66 and my good run went to crap. I also took a pretty bad run on sng's not cashing in 11 straight!!! That's not my worst run ever, but definately was good run killer. I think I was getting a little loose, but had a pretty bad run of bad beats and lost coin flips. I won't get into those too much. I don't think anyone wants to hear about them, but I try to force myself to play a little bit lower than my normal level until things clear up. Easier to say than do. lol. When I first started playing poker I was extremely against the idea of bad Karma or bad feelings can have real effects on a game. I usually find it quite humorous when you see people with all sorts of lucky medalions and such, but as much as I want to believe it's all about the law of statistics and probabilty, I have gone through numerous cycles of "running bad" almost every time it was like I would wach the flop turn and river and as soon as I thought of the cards that could beat me, sure enough they would instantly hit the board. It was like I was negatively willing a bad energy or something.  I know it sounds crazy, but I would just get into these really bad moods and the bad beats would just come left and right  worse and worse!! Now I really try and play smaller. I also try to not look at the screen if I'm already ahead in the hand and we're all in. It may not make any difference in the card outcome, but for some reason not watching the cards hit the board seems to tone down my enragement when I take a beat. I think I feel like it wasn't my fault so much. In fact, now I usually do the opposite when I'm behind allin. I usually just stare and concentrate on the cards I need to win.  It probably is completely crazy, but no matter that, I've found a way to help avoid tilting.

I guess my growing book is long enough for today.  GL all at the tables. Wish me luck. I'll be playing Event #9 - 6 handed NL $1,500 on June 5th. I just booked my room at the "Platinum". A relatively little known hotel behind the Flamingo that looks like it has killer huge rooms. I'm planning on taking my Mom with me as a delayed Mother's day gift, and then were staying at the Luxor on Friday. Hopefully I make it that far in the tourney...Donkeyherder.
